The Gebas Ravine was declared one of the 8 Protected Landscapes of the Region in 1995, and has become one of the most spectacular places of natural beauty. It includes the Algeciras reservoir, where its turquoise waters are a perfect contrast against the almost white mountain rocks.

Built in 1995, the reservoir is part of the General Defense Plan against floods in the Segura river basin. It is an exceptional place for hiking and bird watching, where you can spot various species that have colonized the area, such as herons, seagulls, grebes, mallards or stilts.

The relief of this zone, which occupies an area of some 2,000 hectares between the mountains of Sierra Espuña, La Muela and El Cura, is characterized by gullies, ravines and canyons, which create what is popularly known as a moonscape. Vegetation is limited to grasses and populations of gypsum vegetation, and every year clumps of thero brachypodietea appear, but in general this is a harsh habitat for plant and animal life and the fauna consists only of a few rodents and other small mammals.

The ravine, known as the Barranco de Gebas, is located between the mountains of Sierra Espuña and Sierra del Cura, next to the towns of Gebas and Fuente Librilla. You have to take the A-7 in the direction of Alhama and take exit 631. Then, from Alhama, you must take the regional road that RM-515 in the direction of Mula and, after passing the last houses in Gebas, take a detour to the right towards the Barrancos de Gebas. At the end of the road you reach Casas de la Ermita, the starting point to this enchanting route.

It’s a unique and exciting landscape, providing a total contrast to the green of the Sierra Espuña above it, and is well worth visiting.

At 51 meters tall, this impressive building is the second tallest lighthouse in Spain. A visit to the top consists of climbing around 300 steps up a narrow and steep staircase, so a basic level of fitness and comfortable shoes are essential!

There is free access to the esplanade at the base of the lighthouse, and guided visits can be taken inside for just 6€. The duration of the tour is approximately 30 minutes, where you will learn about the history, architecture, and of course enjoy the spectacular views from the top!

It lies on the ridge of a cape above the sea, west of the city of Cartagena, and boasts breathtaking views. The gun battery was built between between 1933 and 1936 to prevent enemy ships entering the bay to attack the important port and military arsenal at Cartagena.

The cannons were used only once during the Spanish Civil War, in 1937 against Franco’s Nationalist fleet with devastating efficiency. Knowing its presence was more than enough to scare away the enemies. The guns were abandoned by the military only in 1994 and the mysterious site was left behind alone ever after.

The Bateria de Castillitos military buildings are an impressive construction, built in an ornate style reminiscent of an ancient medieval castle. You can look inside some of them including both the gun control bunkers and the towers, with the highlight being the huge 381mm guns with 17m long barrels.

The Batería de Castillitos, located on the RM-E23, can be visited for free and is open all year round. After a steep drive to the top with winding roads, you will experience some breathtaking views, which makes it definitely worth the trip. Be prepared to take along some snacks and water as there are no restaurant or toilet facilities on the site.

The main course offers something for every price point. Bangers and mash with onion gravy for €7.95, the best selling homemade lasagne, served with a side salad and chips for €9.95, or the Southern fried chicken goujons (crispy breaded chicken goujons served with chips or a jacket potato, a side salad and a sweet chilli dip) at €9.95.

There are two premium options on offer – a full rack of baked barbecue ribs comes served with chips and a side salad for €14.95, and the Paddys Point 10 oz sirloin steak arrives at the table with onions, mushrooms, and a side of chips. Very reasonably priced at €15.95.

We would recommend trying Paddys Point for yourself. The comprehensive menu, beautifully presented food, super-friendly team, and casual relaxed atmosphere is a unique and special find here in La Zenia.
